While 16 weeks sounds like a lot, for my previous two goes around this distance, at 16 weeks out I was already in pretty decent shape; this time, I’m almost building up from nothing. Even more worrying, it’s only just over four weeks until my first triathlon of the season. No matter how much work I put in between now and then, it’s safe to say that the Rabo Breukelen Olympic distance race will be the race I’ve been least prepared for since I started triathlon.
So, after two weeks, six flights, a lot of BBQ, many beers and some stag revelry, I’ve finally been back in Amsterdam for a couple of weeks and have managed to out in some consistent training. I’ve just checked my schedule to discover that less than 16 weeks separate me from Challenge Roth - my main event of the year and my third full Iron distance race.

Let's face it, nobody likes a bore. The type of person who has nothing to say or, worse still, can only talk about one thing. As triathletes, we are - let's face it - geeks. We're obsessive and obsessed, and love nothing more than swapping racing tips, talking TT bikes, and discussing the latest ITU performances with other likeminded nerds. But it's becoming more and more important to me to show that triathlon is just a single string to my bow. That life is about more than swim, bike and run. Having a partner who is interested, supportive but essentially a tri civilian certainly helps. It's all about keeping perspective. Becoming a triathlete is like putting on a pair of very peculiar 3D glasses, distorting your view of the world around you. Just some of the things that are warped in Tri Vision are:
As I spoke about in my last post, this weekend we held our first Intro To Tri session, subtitled 'Beers, burgers and bloody good advice'. It attracted more than 20 beginner triathletes, inexperienced racers and folk just wanting to lend their support, and featured three awesome club members and myself imparting our collective wisdom on everything from training to rules, as well as what gear you need to get through your first race or two. |
